I enjoy making pots with explicit functions. I am fond of vessels that suggest specificity, such as deviled egg trays, flower bricks or ring boxes. Generally, my work is informed by 18th and 19th century Victorian fashion and European silver ware as well as modern infomercial-type kitchenware products. They represent both a bygone era of leisurely delight in dining and, ironically, a contemporary vision of highly efficient convenience items. I find it amusing that both these types of items are made for such specificity that they are frequently useless.

In the modern era, many daily rituals are done without much exertion or thought. I find life is more pleasing, however, when I make things from scratch, do it myself, and take the long way. In much the same manner, a special object can enhance it’s intended task, whether it is flowers with breakfast or a container for that favored dish served once a year. The presentation of what we eat and drink is as important a sensory experience as the food or beverage itself. This goes as well, for vessels that contain or display.

I build my pots from slabs using the same techniques I employ when sewing; layered glazes produce a velvety surface. The pots that emerge are elegant, feminine and whimsical. The smooth surface is meant to entice the viewer, as would a rich silk gown, yet comfort, like a beloved childhood quilt.
